Laos strives to become rice exporter by 2013

(KPL) In an effort to become a rice-exporting country by 2013, Laos has organised a forum in Vientiane to discuss measures to boost rice production.

Laos wants to raise living standards for farmers, who account for 80 percent of the country's population of about 5 million people, Planning and Investment Deputy Minister Bounthavy Sisouphanthong told the forum, which was held in coordination with Thailand's International Institute for Trade and Development, on July 16.

In the coming time, the Lao government will help farmers expand rice-growing areas, and provide them with fertilizer, seeds, as well as technicalassistance, the official said.

Additionally, the government will also invest in studying rice demand in the world market, he added. In 2007, Laos produced over 2.7 million tonnes ofrice.
