SENATE PASSES MOTION CONDEMNING ISRAELI ATROCITIES
KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Dewan Negara (Senate) sitting Monday unanimously passed the motion condemning the attack by the Israeli Zionist regime on the Freedom Flotilla convoy bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza on May 31.
The motion tabled at 11.30am by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin
Yassin, and supported by a minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Dr Koh
Tsu Koon, was passed after a debate of more than four hours by members of
the Upper House of Parliament.
The unanimous decision was announced by Senate President Abu Zahar Ujang
with a majority of the Dewan Negara members approving the motion.
Dewan Negara is made up of 70 senators, of whom 44 senators are appointed by
the Malaysian King while another 26 senators are chosen by the state government.
When winding up the debate on the motion, Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A.
Kohilan Pillay said his ministry, through the office of the Malaysian Permanent
Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York, was taking follow-up
action to gain support for a special emergency session before the end of July or
before the Muslim month of Ramadhan at the latest.
The special emergency session would give an opportunity to the international
community to place pressure on the Israeli Zionist regime to lift the illegal
blockade on Gaza by applying existing international law including the relevant
provision contained in the UN Security Council Resolution 1890 (2009).
He said the session would also seek Advisory Opinion from the International
Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Israeli attack on activists on board the Freedom
Flotilla committed in international waters.
