VISION 2020 A NATIONAL VISION - MSIAN PM NAJIB

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak said he acknowledged Vision 2020 introduced by Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a national vision and was committed to achieving it.

"I would like to stress that although Vision 2020 was the brainchild of Tun
Mahathir, we have accepted it as a national vision and whoever succeeded him
(Mahathir) is committed to achieving Vision 2020," he said when answering a
supplementary question from Senator Muhamad Yusof Husin at the Dewan Negara
(Senate) here Monday.

Vision 2020 was launched by Dr Mahathir, the fourth prime minister, when he
tabled the Sixth Malaysia Plan in 1991 in the pursuit of turning Malaysian into
a developed country.

Najib said the projected six percent economic growth rate yearly could be
achieved due to strong internal and external factors.

"If external factors are weak like in 2009 when financial crisis hit the
world, it will be difficult for the country to achieve a high growth rate.

"Therefore, we assume that we can achieve at least six per cent economic
growth, and based on our estimates, if we can achieve six per cent growth rate
every year until 2020, we can attain a developed nation status.

"If something happens beyond our expectation, let say a prolonged global
crisis again, this will certainly lead to adverse effects on us in our quest to
achieve our goal and dream, that is Vision in 2020," he said.

Meanwhile, Najib said he was ready to accept views from any quarters,
including Dr Mahathir on how to achieve Vision 2020.

Najib assured the people of east Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak that
they would also be part of the developed country status as additional
allocations would be provided to offset the infrastructure and rural development
imbalance with the peninsular.

"We realise natural condition and communication problems (in Sabah and
Sarawak) are so critical and it cost a lot of money to reach places in remote
areas.

"However, the government believes that through efforts and huge additional
allocations we will be able to ease the situation," he said.
