MALAYSIA TO ENHANCE COOPERATION WITH TURKMENISTAN AND UZBEKISTAN
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Turkmenistan have recognised the enormous potential for further expansion of cooperation in areas of economy, trade and investment, including oil and gas sectors.
A statement issued by the Foreign Ministry here Monday said both sides also
agreed to enhance cooperation in promoting regional peace and stability.
It said the decision was made during Foreign Minister Anifah
Aman's official visit to Turkmenistan on July 14 and Uzbekistan on July 15 and
16.
During the visit, Anifah met President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and
his counterpart, Rashid O. Meredov.
According to a statement, Berdimuhamedov emphasized the need for both
Malaysia and Turkmenistan as developing countries, to broaden the scope of
cooperation, for mutual benefit.
Berdimuhamedov also expressed his appreciation to Malaysia for providing
training and opportunities for the Turkmenistan people to seek higher education
under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme.
Besides education, the president conveyed his appreciation to Malaysia
for the important role that Petronas has played in developing the oil and gas
industry in Turkmenistan.
Meanwhile, during his visit to Uzbekistan, both sides recognised the
considerable opportunities to strengthen cooperation in areas such as economy,
human resource development, infrastructure, biotechnology, tourism, information
technology and Islamic Banking.
During the visit, Anifah made a courtesy call on Uzbekistan Prime Minister
Shavkat Mirziyoev and his counterpart Vladlmir Norov.
Mirziyoev had among others, conveyed Uzbekistan's request to secure
Malaysia's assistance in relation to technical and managerial expertise as well
as investment from private sectors to strengthen the industrialization process
in the country for stronger and sustainable economic growth.
It said both sides also took the opportunity to exchange views on regional
and international issues such as Afghanistan and the Middle East peace process.
During the visit, Anifah on behalf of the Malaysian government contributed
US$30,000 (RM99,000) to support the ongoing humanitarian programmes undertaken
by the government of Uzbekistan and the UN, for Kyrgyzstan civilians.
