ULFA operatives remanded in seven-day police custody

Dhaka, Jul 21 (PTI) Two leaders of the banned
separatist group ULFA, arrested by the Bangladesh authorities
on Saturday, were Wednesday remanded in police custody for
another seven days by a court in northern Kishorganj district.
Court officials and lawyers said Ranjan Chowdhury,
also known as Major Ranjan, and his aide Pradip Marak were
sent back to police custody after judicial magistrate Muhammad
Ali Ahsan granted a police prayer seeking to interrogate them
for another seven days.
The two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leaders
were arrested from Bhairab in Kishorganj, 70 kms north of
capital Dhaka. The court had on Sunday remanded them in a
three-day police custody, which ended Wednesday.
"The two were attired in bullet proof jacket during
their brief appearance on the dock as they were brought here
under heavy security escorts from Dhaka," a government
prosecutor said.
He said Ranjan and Marak were brought back to Dhaka to
be quizzed at Task Force Intelligence (TFI) Cell, comprising
law enforcement and intelligence agencies, where they were
earlier interrogated.
RAB officials say Ranjan hailed from Madhusolmari
village in Dhubri district in the north-east Indian state of
Assam and he joined the ULFA in 1988 and subsequently obtained
three months of "military training".
The ULFA leader went to Bhutan to meet ULFA's top
military wing commander Paresh Barua in June 1995 and was
arrested by Indian security forces on his return home the next
month.
He was at the Guwahati jail for a year and was
released in 1996.
The actions against the ULFA coincide with an ongoing
investigation on an abortive smuggling of 10-truck loads of
weapons believed to be destined to their hideouts in Assam.
