OBAMA TO ATTEND NEXT YEAR'S EAST ASIA SUMMIT
By Jamaluddin Muhammad
HANOI, July 23 (Bernama) -– United States President Barack Obama is prepared to attend the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Indonesia next year, the Asean-United States meeting was told Thursday.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Asean welcomed the US
intention to join the EAS.
The Asean-US meeting attended by Asean foreign ministers and US Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton was held at the National Convention Centre here.
During the meeting, Malaysia highlighted that the Plan of Action (2010-2015)
to implement the Asean-US Enhanced Partnership which would be adopted in July
next year, would strengthen and deepen the Asean-US dialogue relations, he told
Malaysian journalists later.
He said Malaysia also stated that given the dynamics of the Asean-US
cooperation, Asean and the US should explore and utilise all avenues or
facilitating and pushing forward cooperation in various areas.
"Malaysia looks forward to the establishment of the Asean-US Eminent Persons
Group (EPG) in support of the enhanced Asean-US cooperation in addressing
regional and global issues," he said.
Anifah said the meeting hoped that the US, under Obama's leadership, would
continue to play a more proactive role by working together with Asean, in
bringing about peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
Asked whether Clinton raised the Myanmar issue, Anifah said she had
mentioned it in passing, and Myanmar responded in passing, too.
Answering question on the atmosphere of the meeting, he said it was very
cordial and conducted with mutual respect.
Myanmar has always been heavily criticised by the US for its alleged
violation of human rights and democratic process.
Apart from the US, Asean also held meetings with its nine dialogue partners
-– Australia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, South
Korea and Russia, separately at the convention centre Thursday.
