MUEZZINS SHOULD AVOID SMOKING, SPICY FOOD - SYEIKH ALI AL-MUOLLA.
SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), July 23 (Bernama) -- Muezzins should avoid smoking,
spicy and oily food, and cold drinks to protect their voice, said Masjidil Haram
(Grand Mosque) muezzin head Syeikh Ali Al-Muolla.
He said ironically, he noticed that some muezzins in the country were avid
smokers and this could ruin their voice.
"Muezzins should also refrain from scolding their wives," he told reporters
in jest during his visit to the Al-Madinah International University (Mediu)
here Friday.
He was received by Mediu general manager Bahrudin A. Rahman, who translated
his answers.
Syeikh Ali Al-Muolla, 54, also stood on the minaret to perform the azan (the
call to prayer) for the Friday congregation at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz
Shah Mosque here this afternoon.
Before the advent of technology, muezzin must have a strong voice, he said,
adding that the Grand Mosque used to have six muezzins reading the azan from six
towers around the mosque.
He said the Grand Mosque used to have 24 muezzins but it was reduced to 14
as the call to prayers was now aided by loud speakers.
Syeikh Ali Al-Muolla said while strong voice was the essence of muezzins in
Mecca, muezzins in Medina read the azan in beautiful and melodious voice.
Opened in 2007, Mediu offers virtual learning at bachelor, masters and
doctorate levels in Islamic science, Arabic and information technology.
