UAE mission in USA hosts reception for MIT and Masdar Institute
Washington DC - july 26, 2010 (WAM)- The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington DC hosted a reception for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Masdar Institute. UAE Ambassador to US Yousef Al Otaiba welcomed over 200 participants comprised of MIT alumni to the embassy and thanked them for their interest in Masdar's alternative energy initiatives and its cooperation with MIT.
"Abu Dhabi's collaboration with MIT on renewable energy initiatives will be critical in the progression of this timely field", the Ambassador stated during his welcoming remarks, explaining the UAE's deep interest in renewable energy.
"With projects like Masdar, we hope to use our capital resources to spur innovation, making the UAE the hub of renewable energy technologies worldwide, in turn ensuring that the UAE continues to be a major player in the energy industry", he added.
The Ambassador introduced and turned the podium over to Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Masdar Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Al Jaber first commended Al Otaiba on his ongoing efforts to enhancing relations between the United Arab Emirates and United States.
Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the Ambassador's efforts by pointing out that, "Over the past two years the UAE's relations with the US have improved significantly on several fronts including: Trade; Security; Commerce; Education and Energy".
He continued his remarks by underscoring the strong relationship Masdar has developed with MIT. He explained that it is a relationship that has led to the successful establishment of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology a private, home-grown, graduate level, research-driven University, fully dedicated to renewable energy and sustainability.
MIT is supporting the Masdar Institute in several integral areas. Masdar Institute is focusing on transferring MIT's culture of entrepreneurship and research excellence to Masdar Institute by developing mechanisms aimed at strengthening research ties and knowledge sharing, and jointly engaging in cutting edge, collaborative research that are of industrial importance.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber stressed, "Together we will cultivate the researchers, academics and leaders that will fuel the renewable energy sector's human capital requirements, and lay the foundation for a culture of technological innovation, and R'&'D excellence".
Dr. Al Jaber introduced Dr. Fred Moavenzadeh, President of Masdar Institute of Science and Technology to say a few remarks. Dr. Moavenzadeh was selected as president because of his long and distinguished career at MIT in developing new models of teaching and research through international initiatives in education, science and technology. During his career, Moavenzadeh has conducted and supervised major research activities both in his role as Director of the Technology and Development Program as well as Director of the Centre for Technology, Policy, and Industrial Development.
He has served as a private consultant to the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank and various United Nations agencies.
Following the remarks, both Dr. Al Jaber and Dr. Moavenzadeh answered questions from the participants. The embassy event is in conjunction with the first-ever Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) hosted in Washington DC, July 19-20 to discuss collective avenues of cooperation and knowledge sharing in promoting policies and programs that address the development of clean energy technologies and the mitigation of climate change.
