1.20 lakh MT rice arrives from India
CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, July 23 (BSS) - Twelve ships carrying around 1.20 lakh metric tons of rice have arrived at the port since July10, officials said today.
Of the 12 ship, they said, six are waiting at the outer anchorage of the port and six have taken berth at port jetty forunloading of the consignments.
The rice brought from India is part of the Indian government's earlier commitment to sell total five lakh metrictons of rice to Bangladesh for meeting the domestic demand.
With the latest arrival, sources said, Bangladesh so far received around 2.5 lakh out of five lakh metric tons of rice from India. Earlier, around one lakh metric ton rice arrived inthe country through land routes.
Additional Regional Controller of Food, Chittagong division, S M Kaiser Ali said more rice carrying ships from India are likely to arrive here within a short time after unloading ofcurrent consignments at the port.
Controller of Movement and Storage (CMS Food), Chittagong, Salahuddin Ahmad said around 40,000 out of 1.2 lakh metric tons of rice had already been unloaded from the vessels and were transported to different food godowns located in Chittagong andDhaka divisions.
Currently, on an average, 4,000 metric tons of rice are beingunloaded from the vessels every day, the officials said.
The CMS Food said they have taken some urgent measures for speedy unloading of rice from ships and their timelytransportation.
The measures include carrying rice through Railway wagons from port jetty to Dhaka, engaging centrally enlisted contractors (CRTC category) for carrying rice from Chittagong side by side with contractors enlisted for divisional jurisdiction (DRTC category) and allowing DRTC category contractors for carryingrice for unlimited amount for the time being.
Rice can be unloaded and transported quickly from the port if adequate space is available at short-distance food storingfacilities like Halishahar and Dewanhat CSDs, the officials said.
