POLICE ZERO-IN ON BANGKOK BOMBING SUSPECTS
By Jamaluddin Muhammad
BANGKOK, July 26 (Bernama) -– The police are in the midst of identifying
several suspects in connection with a bombing incident in the city yesterday,
which left one dead and injured eight others, based on close-circuit television
camera (CCTV).
National Police Advisor Police General Panupong Singharana Ayudhya said
Monday the CCTV in the area had captured images of suspicious people who might
have planted the bomb.
The bomb used in the attack was identified as M-67 grenade which was
triggered by a timing device, he said.
The bomb exploded at 5.45pm Sunday, after it was placed inside a trash
bin at a bus stop in front of the Big C Departmental Store, opposite the Central
World Shopping Complex at Ratchadamri Road here.
The bombing occured despite the current state of emergency enforced in
Bangkok.
While the bombing occurred during a Bangkok by-election, the military
believes it was unrelated to the by-election in which rulling party candidate
Panich Vikitsreth of the Democrat Party won after defeating opposition party
candidate Korkaew Pikulthong of Puea Thai Party.
Panupong suspects the attack was aimed at creating chaos and unrest after
the city experienced the worst unrest two months ago, in which 90 people died
and 1,800 were injured.
