Over 1,050 cases pending in CBI: Govt
New Delhi, July 28 (PTI) More than 1,050 corruption,
fraud and crime cases are pending with the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI), the Indian government was informed
Wednesday.
In a written reply in Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian
Parliament), Minister of State for Personnel, Public
Grievances and Pensions Prithviraj Chavan said a total of
1,069 cases were pending with the investigating agency as on
June 30.
However, the number of pending cases has come down
from 1,143 cases in 2007, he said.
"Special counsels to conduct trials are appointed on
the recommendation of the CBI, keeping in view the sensitivity
and legal implications of a case. Recently, a scheme for
contractual appointment of law officers has also been notified
enabling CBI to engage 60 law officers on contractual basis
for a period of up to five years," Chavan said.
The minister said there was no proposal for creation
of an independent directorate of prosecution in the CBI. PTI
