GENERAL MOTORS AIMS TO SELL 1.9 MILLION CARS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
By Jamaluddin Muhammad
BANGKOK, July 29 (Bernama) -– General Motors plans to sell 1.9 million cars
in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia this year amid their booming economies.
President of General Motors (GM) for Southeast Asia, Martin Apfel, said the
company aimed to sell 700,000 cars in Thailand, 650,000 cars in Indonesia and
580,000 cars in Malaysia.
"Sound economic growth, growing consumer confidence and interesting products
by GM have contributed to the sales target," he said.
In total, Chevrolet sales in Southeast rose 22.0 per cent for the first half
of this year compared to the corresponding period last year, he said.
Malaysia, he said, had a record for the first half year, registering a
growth of 20 per cent year-on-year.
Apfel said GM would lay the foundation and drive the next stage of growth in
Southeast Asian region via aggressive plans involving customers, dealers and
employees.
"We will focus on positioning Southeast Asia at the forefront of GM's global
operations and achieve a fair share of the Southeast Asian market."
He said the company planned to achieve the target through fostering
engagement with key stakeholders and building relationships, developing quality
products and enhancing service levels.
"We are growing our local engineering capabilities and expanding our local
centre by 20 per cent. We need to build where we sell and for that to happen,
we need even more localisation," he said.
GM, one of the world's largest automakers, was established in 1908 with its
headquarters in Detroit. It sells vehicles under the brands Buick, Cadillac,
Chevrolet, FAW, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling.
