HAWKERS AND PETTY TRADERS CAN REMAIN SUCCESSFUL DESPITE STIFF COMPETITION - MUHYIDDIN
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said
the future of hawkers and petty traders in the country remains bright although
faced with various challenges, including stiff competition from hypermarkets and
supermarkets.
He added that hawkers and petty traders would continue to play a role in the
community because they have their own market and clients.
"Hawkers and petty traders have their own market and their own clients whom they
entertain personally. For example, as long as tasty food is served in a clean
environment, customers will not go away from their food stall.
"Similarly, although they cannot compete with supermarkets or hypermarkets, they
can match them in terms of personal touch and attention towards their
customers," he said when speaking at the Heritage Food Expo 2010 organised by
the Selangor Malay Hawkers and Petty Traders Association.
Muhyiddin said he was confident that the number of hawkers and petty traders in
the country would continue to increase although some had to wind up their
businesses due to various reasons.
He also urged Bumiputera (sons of the soil) hawkers and petty traders to bravely
and venture into such businesses through pro-active and radical ways.
Muhyiddin added that the government was always committed towards assisting
hawkers and petty traders to elevate their socio-economic status.
