TUANKU MIZAN PAYS TRIBUTE TO COUNTRY'S HEROES

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysian King Tuanku Mizan Zainal
Abidin Saturday paid tribute to the country's heroes, saying their sacrifices
had ensured that peace and harmony prevailed in the country.

Speaking at the Warrior's Day celebrations here, Tuanku Mizan said members
of the security forces had contributed immensely towards helping the country
achieve progress and prosperity.

"Let us make the Warrior's Day, which falls on July 31 each year, a day in
which we remember our heroes either those who are still in service or those who
have fallen in the line of duty," he said at the 2010 Warrior's Day celebration
at Merdeka Square, here.

Present were Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Defence
Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

Tuanku Mizan, who earlier inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by the armed
forces, also said that the country's security forces made the country proud not
only domestically but also at the international level.

"The country's security forces have proven their capability in carrying out
duties in 26 countries such as in Western Sahara, Somalia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Croatia and Timor Leste," he said.

He also called on members of the security forces to remain highly committed
to their duties to help make Malaysia safe.

Tuanku Mizan also expressed the hope that unity among the people could be
further strengthened in line with the 1Malaysia vision mooted by Prime Minister
Najib Tun Razak.

A total of 806 personnel from the army, navy, air force, police as well as
members of the ex-servicemen and ex-policemen associations took part in the
parade in conjunction with the Warrior's Day.

There was also a pantomime performance depicting the battle for Bukit
Chandu, Singapore, in 1942 where a heavily outnumbered Malay platoon led by Lt
Adnan Saidi held off the Japanese soldiers for two days until they were
eventually overpowered and Adnan was captured, tied to a tree and bayoneted to
death.
