PROMOTE TRADITIONAL FOODFARE TO ENTICE TOURISTS
KUCHING, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation
(SEDC) wants Malay villages situated along the banks of Sungai Sarawak, to
promote the "cendol" dessert to local tourists, State Tourism Assistant Minister
Talip Zulpilip said Saturday.
Talip, who is also SEDC chairman, said the dessert originating from
Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar, was already being promoted at Riverside Majestic
Hotel and Grand Margherita Hotel, both owned by the SEDC.
Cendol is made from coconut milk, a worm-like jelly made from rice flour
with green food colouring derived from the pandan leaf, shaved ice and palm
sugar.
"The cendol from this village has received tremendous response from
tourists.
"Foreign tourists find such traditional food fare, which is delicious and
wholesome, very exotic," he said when launching a food fair at Kampung Sungai
Bedil Besar, Petra Jaya, near here Saturday.
The two-day food fair is being held in conjunction with the ongoing Sarawak
Regatta.
Talip was confident sales of traditional food products would help uplift the
socio-economic status of villagers by the spin-offs created when tourists visit
their villages.
Additional delicacies from Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar is expected to be
included in the Ramadhan menu to be served at SEDC's two hotels.
