Emergency project to strengthen social safety discussed


HODEIDAH, July 31 (Saba) -
Yemen, European Union (EU) and World Bank (WB) discussed in Hodeidah governorate on
Saturday
mechanism to implement an emergency project to strengthen the social safety network.
Hodeidah governor Ahmed al-Jabali discussed with EU representative and the WB's
representative Afrah al-Ahmadi reviewed the goals of the EU-funded project at a
total cost
of 17.5 million Euro and under the WB supervision.
It targets 58,000 families in 14 governorates and includes two main components. The
First one is the labor-intensive employment, which is to be carried out by the
Social
Fund for Development (SFD). The other component is the direct cash subsidy via the
Social Welfare Fund (SWF).
During the meeting, al-Jabali called on the concerned bodies in the SFD and the SWF
to spare no efforts to deliver such assistance to the needy people.
In return, the WB representative reviewed the main goals of the projects, including
tackling the impacts of the food prices' soaring as a result of the global food
crisis
and reducing child labor and trafficking as well as handling effects of natural
disasters.
