President, PM, Sonia condole death of K M Mathew

Kottayam/New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Indian President
Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA
Chairperson Sonia Gandhi Sunday condoled the death of Chief
Editor of Malayala Manorama K M Mathew, describing him as a
visionary and a true champion of Indian journalism.
"We have lost a hardworking, dynamic and visionary
journalist who made Malayala Manorama a major Indian language
daily," the President said.
"K M Mathew was a leading light of the Indian press
fraternity.... In his death, particularly the state of Kerala,
has lost a true champion of the highest traditions of Indian
journalism," the Prime Minister, who called up the bereaved
family, said in a message.
Singh said Mathew had distinguished tenures as the
Chairman of the Press Trust of India, President of the
Newspaper Society of India and as member of the Press Council
of India.
Gandhi also called up the family to convey her
condolences.
Mathew, a doyen of Indian media industry and a former
Chairman of PTI, passed away in Kottayam this morning at the
age of 93.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika
Soni recalled his "unparallelled" contribution towards
development journalism and said that Mathew was a pioneer in
the development of language media in the country.
Chairman of PTI Board of Directors, Vijay Kumar
Chopra, paid tributes to Mathew, recalling his services to the
Indian media and to PTI in particular.
"He was a visionary who left a mark on the Indian
media industry. His contribution to the growth of PTI was also
significant," Chopra said.
The Editors Guild of India said Mathew had spearheaded
a media revolution.
"As Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama group, K M
Mathew set new benchmarks in language journalism and
spearheaded a media revolution," Editors Guild President
Rajdeep Sardesai said here.
"He held many important positions including the
chairmanship of the PTI. We have lost one the giants of the
journalistic fraternity, whose contributions to journalism
will not be forgotten," he added.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, leaders of
political parties and people from different walks of life also
expressed profound grief at the passing away of the veteran
