TEACHERS IN POLITICS WILL PRODUCE LEADERS WITH CALIBRE - MINISTER

KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), August 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government's
decision to allow graduate teachers in grades DG41 and DG48 to be involved in
politics will produce leaders with calibre for the country, said Minister for
International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed.

He said the "voice of the teachers" in the country's political environment
was badly needed as they were well received in society and the decision would
provide positive impact to the nation.

"It will produce political leadership and the decision has generated
positive impact while the country is in need of political leaders with calibre,
intregrity and well respected, " he told reporters after officiating an
University of Malaysia, Kelantan (UMK), here Sunday.

UMK is a public university located in Kelantan, an east coast state in
Peninsular Malaysia.

Mustapa said this in commenting on the recent decision by the government to
enable teachers in the grades to engage in poltics.
