BANGLADESH OFFERS ATTRACTIVE INCENTIVES FOR MALAYSIAN INVESTORS
By Zainal Abdul Jalil
ALOR SETAR (Malaysia), Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Bangladesh is inviting Malaysian
entrepreneurs to grab opportunities in the country's infrastructure development
and manufacturing sectors, amid its government policy of assurance for all
foreign investments.
Its High Commissioner to Malaysia, A.K.M. Atiqur Rahman, said the two
sectors were now expanding in his country, offering good returns on investments.
"The Bangladesh government is pushing up its infrastructure development
especially the highways and roads linking the main cities and ports.
"These projects are aimed at promoting expansion in the manufacturing
industries, exports and tourism in Bangladesh," he told Bernama in an interview
here Tuesday.
Also present at the meeting was First Secretary, Dr Md. Rezaul Bashar
Siddique and officers from the Bangladesh Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
Atiqur Rahman earlier gave a briefing on investment opportunities in
Bangladesh to entrepreneurs from the Kedah state, urging them to invest in his
country.
Currently, 80 Malaysian investors have invested a total of US$1.5 billion in
the country covering various fields including telecommunications and
manufacturing.
For the financial period from July 2009 to June 2010, Malaysian exports to
Bangladesh amounted to US$800 million while imports only stood at US$62 million,
Atiqur Rahman said.
He said Malaysia was the second largest exporter of palm oil to his country
with other major exports being petroleum products and electronics while
Bangladesh exported clothings, agriculture produce and seafood.
"With a population of 150 million people, there is profits for potential
investments in Banglades. In fact, our government gives priority to foreign
investors apart from the attractive incentives offered to them," he said.
There are many common grounds enjoyed by both the countries such as good
inter-government relations and both being Islamic countries which can help to
increase two-way trade, he added.
Atiqur Rahman said there were plans to hold similar briefings for
entrepreneurs from all the other states. The states covered so far are Pulau
Pinang, Sabah, Sabah and Sarawak.
