Champasak to host six-nation Mekong Tourism Forum in May 2011

VIENTIANE,03 AUG (KPL) - The Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA), Mekong Tourism Coordination Office (MTCO) and Tourism Service of Champassak province are jointly organizing the 12th Mekong Tourism Forum or MTF, to be held in Champassak province next year, May 27-28.
This was said by Deputy Chairman of LNTA, Mr. Vang Latanavong, Head of Planning and Cooperation Department during a press conference in Vientiane on 2 August. Head of Tourism Administration Service of Champassak province, Ms. Mala Chanthalam and relevant officials were also at this press release meeting.
Mr. Vang said the main objective of this forum is to promote the Greater Mekong Countries (GMS) or Mekong River countries as a single tourism destination and also to encourage tourism investment in any of the six nations, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and China.
MTF 2011will enable the GMS countries to showcase their new products, recent developments, current opportunities, ongoing challenges, service standards and sustainable tourism
practices.
The programme for the first day’s forum will see representatives from the six countries give overviews and updates on tourist destinations in their respective countries and tourism experts from the specific countries will be selected as moderators of the these sessions.
For the second day, the delegates will discuss three areas: the issues and challenges of overland travel and access to remote destinations, the importance of service quality and education/training in the tourism and hospitality sectors and responsible/sustainable practices to preserve tourism assets.
