SCOMI KEEN ON CHENNAI MONORAIL PROJECT

By P. Vijian

CHENNAI, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysian company Scomi International is now eyeing a major monorail construction project in the south Indian city of Chennai, as city planners mull alternative transportation mode to ease traffic in India's fastest growing city.

"Chennai is exploring to introduce monorail for their city, similar to the
Mumbai monorail project.

"I have promoted Scomi to the Tamil Nadu government, we encourage more Malaysian
companies, like Scomi to enter the Indian market. They are already involved in
the Mumbai monorail project" Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister
Raja Nong Chik told Bernama here Thursday.

He is on an official trade tour to the south Indian city, accompanied by 20
officials, to promote Kuala Lumpur among Indian entrepreneurs as a strategic
investment centre in the region.

Last Tuesday he held talks with Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in
Chennai.

Commenting on the monorail project in Chennai, Scomi International General
Manager (Business Development, India) S. Selvaraja Chinnasamy said the company
had submitted a proposal to the state government.

"We submitted a proposal to the state about three months ago and hopefully by
year-end there will be some developments.

"There are plans to build two corridors, a 24 km stretch and another 20 km
stretch in Chennai metropolitan. We are keen to participate in these projects,"
added Selvaraja.

Chennai is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India with a population of
nearly 4.3 million.

Scomi is currently involved in the construction of India's first monorail
project in Mumbai, a 19.5 km stretch, at cost of RM1.85 billion (US$583.87
million) and will partner Indian-based Larsen and Toubro Ltd to construct the
mega project in Mumbai.
