M'SIAN YOUTHS TO PRESENT VIEWS ON WORLD ISSUES AT GMUN 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- For the first time, 47 Malaysian youths will
have the opportunity to have their say on various issues at the 2nd Global Model
United Nations Conference 2010 (GMUN 2010) to be held on Aug 14 to 18 at the
Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here.
Adjunct professor of the Department of International and Strategic Studies,
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya (UM), Dr Rajmah Hussain
said, the 47 youths would be representing Malaysia at the conference.
"It is a channel for youths to express ideas, opinions and alternative solutions
to the issues that have alredy been discussed at the United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA).
The resolutions from the conference will be presented to UNGA president Joseph
Deiss.
"The conference is to encourage the participants to develop projects to support
and promote the UN cause in their respective countries.
"At the conference, they will also be given the role of diplomats or permanent
representatives to the United Nations from some 80 foreign countries and
participate in simulated UNGA plenary sessions," Rajmah said of the GMUN 2010,
here, Thursday.
Through this role, the youths would be introduced to the UN systems and be
involved in solving global issues, said Rajmah, a career diplomat, who held her
last post of Malaysian ambassador to the United States before her retirement in
2009.
"I hope the conference will inspire young people, especially youth leaders who
aspire to become ambassadors or diplomats, or to work in the United Nations or
become experts in various fields in the global effort to support peace,
development and human rights around the world."
The conference will also help participants develop skills such as public
speaking, preparing speechs, networking and socialising.
As part of the preparation for the conference, the Malaysian participants
attended a training course on "Leadership in a Changing Global Enviroment"
organised by UM and the International Institute of Public Policy and Management
(NPUMA) on Aug 1 to 5 at Vistana Hotel, here.
