India to pursue issue of nuclear weapon-free world at UNGA

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) India proposes to pursue the issue
of nuclear weapon-free world as envisaged under the Rajiv
Gandhi Action Plan 1988 in the first Committee in the
forthcoming UN General Assembly commencing next month.
India's External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said
government remained committed to the objectives of the 1988
Action Plan for nuclear weapon-free and non-violent world
order.
He said India's national statements in recent years at
the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva have also included
references to the Rajiv Gandhi Action Plan. "Government
proposes to pursue this matter in the First Committee in the
forthcoming UN General Assembly commencing in September 2010,"
he said while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha (Upper
House of Parliament) Thursday.
In 1988, then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi proposed
an action plan for ushering in a nuclear weapon-free and
non-violent world order, envisaging a binding commitment by
all nations to the elimination of nuclear weapons in stages by
