Dengue fever claims 26 lives

VIENTIANE 09 AUG (KPL) - Dengue fever - a monsoon disease epidemic, has claimed 26 lives nationwide out of more than 9,000 dengue fever victims.
The fever “DF” has developed itself through infection with exposed or hidden symptoms, said last week Assoc. Prof. Dr Bounkong Sihavong, member of the Faculty of Medical Science, who is also Deputy Director General of Mahosoth hospital.
Presently, the emergency room of Mahosoth hospital has been treating 321 people infected with DF, 190 of whom are classified to be critical and three reported dead.
The three deaths were residents of Park Ngum and Saythany districts in Vientiane Capital, and Borikhamsay province.
Last month, 1,012 adults and 890 children infected with DF were reportedly accepted to hospital, according to statistics.
On average, 60 DF-infected patients go to hospital for treatment daily, and more than 200 people are in hospital.
In order to implement the Prime Minister’s directive on prevention and control of the fever, Dr Bounkong called on people countrywide, particularly people with fever symptom should drink a lot of water, among other measures.
The risk groups are pregnant women, people living with diabetes. If having a fever, children should go see a doctor, he warned.
Mahosoth hospital has increased medical analysis and provided hygienic education to people.
“Our medical staff and two medical workers from every province have been trained in new technical treatment according to manual to cope with the fever outbreak,” he said.
