MILK POWDER LINKED TO ABNORMAL BREAST DEVELOPMENT IN INFANTS?

By Vincent Low

BEIJING, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The health ministry has instructed food safety authorities in Hubei Province to investigate claims that milk powder caused abnormal breast development in three infant girls.

Ministry spokesman Deng Haihua said samples of milk powder from the
Qingdao-based manufacturer would be tested before an announcement was made upon
completion.

He said the ministry would engage medical experts to examine the infants,
aged between four and 15 months.

According to a report in the Health Times last Friday, the parents of the
infants in Wuhan city, Hebei province complained their babies had shown abnormal
breast development.

Subsequently, medical tests from a local hospital revealed that the
estradiol and prolactin hormones in the babies exceeded those found in an
average adult woman.

Doctors suspect the infant formula fed to the babies might have caused the
sexual precocity.
