MALAYSIA-UAE TRADE UP 25.1 PCT IN H1 2010

DUBAI, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Total trade between Malaysia and the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) grew by 25.1 per cent in the first half of 2010 to 9.32
billion dirhams from 7.45 billion dirhams in the same period last year (US$1 =
3.67 dirham).
According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade),
during January-June 2010, Malaysian exports to the UAE were up 23.2 per cent to
5.97 billion dirhams from 4.85 billion dirhams in the first half of 2009.
The UAE remained Malaysia's largest source of imports from the West Asian
region, up by 29 per cent in the first six months of 2010 over the corresponding
period in 2009.
Malaysia imported 3.35 billion dirhams worth of goods from the UAE in first
half 2010 compared to 2.6 billion dirhams in first half 2009.
"We're encouraged with this positive development in trade figures between
Malaysia and UAE," Dubai-based Matrade's senior trade commissioner Dzulkifli
Mahmud told Bernama.
Elaborating, he said jewellery products still occupied the top spot,
accounting for 33.3 per cent of Malaysia's total exports to the UAE in
January-June 2010.
Jewellery exports rose by 2.7 per cent to 1.98 billion dirhams in first half
2010 from 1.93 billion dirhams in first half 2009.
Palm oil, sawn timber as well as electrical and electronic goods recorded
among the highest increase in exports with 107.4 per cent, 53.5 per cent and
50.2 per cent growth respectively.
Malaysia exported 506.8 million dirhams worth of palm oil,75.8 million
dirhams of sawn timber and 1.82 billion dirhams of electrical and electronic
items to the UAE in January-June 2010.
The major import products from the UAE during the period were crude
petroleum valued at 775.3 million dirhams, followed by manufactured metal
products (261.1 million dirhams) and refined petroleum products (133.7 million
dirhams).
