MATRADE FRANKFURT BRACES FOR "VERY BUSY WEEKS" AHEAD
By Manik Mehta
FRANKFURT, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- With a number of Malaysian trade and business
promotion events scheduled to take place in Germany in the next couple of
months, the Frankfurt office of the Malaysia Trade Development Corporation
(Matrade) is bracing for "very busy weeks" ahead.
In an interview with Bernama in his Frankfurt office, the Malaysian trade
commissioner in Germany, Mohd Sabri Ab Rahman, emphasised that Malaysia's
industry needed to increase its presence at German trade fairs which provided a
good platform for Malaysia to showcase its products and its technological
prowess in a number of industries.
An important upcoming German trade fair for Malaysia is the Frankfurt
International Book Fair which will be held from October 6 to 10.
Malaysian publishers, printing houses, book wholesalers and others are
expected to attend this fair, according to Sabri.
"Although three Malaysian companies will be participating under the Matrade
pavilion, there will be 17 other Malaysian companies participating on their
own," Sabri explained.
Following the book fair, Malaysia will be participating at the K' 2010 fair
in Duesseldorf from October 27 to November 3. This is the world's largest fair
for the plastics and rubber industry.
"We will have 13 Malaysian companies under the Malaysian pavilion which will
be set up at the K' 2010 fair.
"Malaysian companies will showcase a wide array of products, including cell
cast acrylic sheets, plastics part manufacturing solutions, custom-moulded
rubber parts, automotive parts and components, stretch film, plastic injection,
electric and engineering plastics injection moulds, tools and dies, PET Master
batches, screws and barrels for plastic and rubber injection and extrusion
machinery as well as plastics fittings," Sabri said.
The Malaysian trade commissioner also disclosed that Matrade would be
organising a specialised marketing mission for rubber and plastics from October
24 to 29, in conjunction with the K' 2010 fair, to explore business
opportunities in the targeted markets, promoting their products and services to
Germany as well as the European Union member states.
The visiting delegation will include representatives of 12 companies from
the plastics and rubber sectors.
In one-on-one meetings, pre-arranged by Matrade's Frankfurt office,
Malaysian delegates will have opportunities to discuss with buyers.
Sabri, who described the plastics and rubber industry as "one of the most
dynamic industries of Malaysia", attributed the industry's growth to rising
demand for plastics and rubber products, and also to new uses of plastics and
rubber products in areas covering electronics, automobiles, construction and
also agriculture.
Germany's importance for Malaysia's plastics and rubber industries becomes
obvious: Germany was the third largest export destination for Malaysian rubber
products in 2009 with rubber gloves (surgical and non-surgical) becoming the
largest rubber-product category followed by vulcanised rubber thread.
Also on the cards is a special Malaysian marketing outsourcing delegation
which will be in Berlin from November 8 to 10.
The timing of the visit of the mission, which will make a strong pitch for
Malaysia as an outsourcing centre, will also coincide with a special Asia
outsourcing conference, including outsourcing opportunities in Malaysia, in
Berlin from November 10 to 12.
With the inclusion of companies that cater to the aerospace industry,
Matrade hopes the delegation can make a pitch to the aerospace sector as well.
Meanwhile, the latest import figures compiled by Matrade show that
Malaysia's exports to Germany in the first half of 2010 jumped 29.93 per cent to
RM8.086 billion (US$2.53 billion), compared to the year-earlier period. Imports,
on the other hand, rose by 20.6 per cent to RM10.113 billion (US$3.16 billion).
Malaysia's exports of electronics and eletric products, the mainstay of
exports, showed an impressive 24.1 per cent growth to RM 5.726 billion in the
first half of 2010 over the year-earlier period.
