AID VOLUNTEER ALMOST FAINTS IN GAZA HEAT
From Syed Azwan Syed Ali
GAZA CITY, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- A volunteer of the Putera 1Malaysia Club
humanitarian aid mission to Gaza almost fainted from dehydration Friday when
helping to distribute food and blankets to 300 families at the Der Al-Balah Camp
near here.
Azman Mohd Noor, 43, a Utusan Malaysia reporter, felt weak when he and the
66 other volunteers of the aid mission had arrived at 2.25pm at the Der Al-Balah
Community Clinic run by the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
He had earlier joined 40 other Muslim volunteers in a two-km walk from the
Al-Yafa Mosque after having attended Friday prayers there.
As the volunteers were busy distributing the aid, Azman almost fainted and
was given treatment at the clinic by several of the Malaysian doctors in the
team.
Dr Rihana Rafie, who examined Azman, said the father of four was dehydrated
due to the 40-degree Celsius temperature. Besides, he had been working hard
covering the aid distribution and was fasting as well.
Dr Rihana advised Azman to break his fast to recover faster but the
journalist continued with his fast after his blood pressure
returned to normal following administration of an intravenous drip.
Azman continued with his coverage after he was asked to rest at the
community clinic by head of mission, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, before the
team moved on to another location nearby.
A volunteer from Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), Safeek Affendy Razali,
suffered a gout attack in the leg. He was given an injection.
Some of the volunteers had been suffering from itchiness of the skin, sore
throat and diarrhoea since entering the region of conflict on Aug 8 to
distribute aid to about 2,000 families in several settlements in Gaza.
So far, more than 1,200 families in Jabalyah, Der Al-Balah, Gaza City, Khan
Younis and Saifa, in the northern area of Gaza bordering Israel, have received
food, blankets and medicine which were distributed at hospitals, clinics, the
Palestine Red Crescent Society store and from door to door.
