MEPC DUBAI EYEING STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES SPONSORED BY BIG COMPANIES

By Muin Abdul Majid

DUBAI, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Dubai-based Malaysia Education Promotion
Centre (MEPC) is wooing big companies like oil corporations as well as Islamic
foundations and organisations in this region to send their sponsored students
and employees to study in Malaysia.

MEPC regional director for Middle East and North Africa, Shushilil Azam
Shuib, said for a start, the Libyan national oil company would be sending 14
people for post-graduate studies in Malaysian universities.

"It gives out some 3,000 sponsorships annually. So, there's big potential
there.

"We're also targeting other oil companies in the Gulf and the wider Middle
East region, as well as property developers," he told Bernama here.

According to Shushilil Azam, the move was in line with the Malaysian Higher
Education Ministry's intention to attract more quality students to further their
education in Malaysia.

He said MEPC Dubai was also promoting Malaysian education among Islamic
foundations and organisations in the hope that they would send their students to
Malaysia.

The education official did just that during a recent programme attended by
prominent Islamic scholars and representatives of Islamic institutions from all
over the world organised in the United Arab Emirates recently.

"There, we managed to identify some 30 students who're serious about
pursuing their Masters and PhD in Malaysia," he said.

Shushilil Azam also noted that a Turkish Islamic research centre had shown
keen interest to send candidates to pursue further studies at Malaysian
institutions of higher learning.

"And later on, when they're stationed in Central Asian countries for
example, perhaps they could spread the word about Malaysian education," he said.
