With Bihar government declaring all its 38 districts
as drought hit, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pledged that no
one will be allowed to starve.
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi
formally launched a housing scheme aimed at replacing huts
with concrete structures in the state.
The Kalaignar Housing Scheme, announced in the
Governor's address to the state Assembly this year, envisaged
conversion of 21 lakh huts into concrete houses with financial
aid from the state government over a period of six years,
Karunanidhi said after hoisting the national flag at the Fort
St George.
The Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam leader also announced a
scheme for making youths employable, in line with the United
Nations declaration of the year as the 'International Year of
Youth'.
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan asked the
people to fight extremism and communalism in order to maintain
peace and protect the country's freedom.
Addressing a gathering at Thiruvanathapuram,
Achuthanandan warned against the designs of certain fanatic
religious sections. He also asked the Centre to take steps to
implement land reforms.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma expressed
concern over the activities of new militant outfits and those
from Assam as a 36-hour shutdown by a proscribed outfit
paralysed life in four Khasi-Jaintia districts of the state.
In Punjab, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal
said that the state is all set for a major transformation as
governance reforms in all departments are being implemneted
for accelerated development at all levels.
He said that state government was committed to end
the chronic scarcity of power by commissioning four
major Thermal Plants being setup at the combined cost of Rs.
36,000 crores with total generation capacity of 6,500 MW
power.
A candle light vigil was organised at the Indo-Pak
Attari border at midnight by the members from Indian chapter
of South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and Hind Pak
Dosti to convey the message of friendship, peace and love.
However, the SAFMA members in Pakistan were not
permitted to come near the international gate.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said his government wants
to develop Maharashtra, which has been the "most preferred
destination of foreign investors", so that it can match global
standards.
"Instead of getting caught into issues related to
caste, religion and language, the government intends to
concentrate on development," Chavan said in his address. PTI
