MAKE 1MALAYSIA THE BASIS TO PROMOTE GLOBAL UNITY
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery
Cheek has urged Malaysia's younger generation to explore the 1Malaysia concept
and make it the basis to promote global unity.
Saying the concept could inspire what he called a "1World Nation", Ahmad
Shabery said Malaysia believed that the diversity and the varied backgrounds of
a nation was not an obstacle to peace and prosperity.
"This is the fundamental of 1Malaysia concept," he said when launching the
five-day Global Model United Nations (GMUN) 2010 Conference here Monday.
He said that the success of Malaysia today was due to the tolerance among
its people.
He urged GMUN participants to share their experience here with the world.
"It takes a small step from you. Tweet where you are, tag all of us here and
also flick your photos, share your experience here with the world. Hopefully we
can have a giant leap to a global peace."
Ahmad Shabery said allowing the young delegates from all over the world to
converge at the conference would provide them opportunities to network, explore
ideas, analyse problems, debate issues and propose solutions to conflicts.
A total of 360 universities students from 58 UN member countries, including
62 from Malaysia, took part in the conference organised by the UN Department of
Public Information.
On the proliferation of social media, Ahmad Shabery said the youth could
leverage on these technologies to discuss ways to reduce conflicts and manage
new challenges.
"Global warming and climate change, for example, exist because of the
growing demands for energy... we burn more fuels, we deplete our resources for
our enjoyment and consumption," he said.
It was encouraging, therefore, that active promotion for greener world was
being advocated by the global youth community, he said.
