MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA AGREE TO SETTLE MARITIME DISPUTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to settle their maritime dispute by releasing those detained on Friday, said a Foreign Ministry statement here Monday.

Seven Malaysian fishermen were detained by the Indonesian Marine and Fisheries
Ministry for alleged encroachment.

Malaysian Marine Operations Force later detained three Indonesian Marine and
Fisheries Ministry officers.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman and his Indonesian counterpart Dr R.M Marty
M.Natalegawa had agreed to settle the matter amicably.

"All those detained will be released after their statements are recorded," the
statement added.

The ministry would follow-up with Malaysian agencies and the Indonesian embassy
here so that the fishermen would be released soon.

Seven Malaysian fishermen fishing off Kota Tinggi, Johor were detained and taken
to Indonesian waters for alleged encroachment.
