67-MEMBER GAZA HUMANITARIAN MISSION REACHES CAIRO
From Syed Azwan Ali
CAIRO, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Sixty-seven members of the Putera 1Malaysia Club
humanitarian mission to Gaza, in collaboration with the Malaysian Red Crescent
Society, arrived here at 10.15pm local time on Monday (Tuesday, 4.15am on
Malaysian time) after making their way out of Gaza at the end of their mission.
The team left the Rafah border in two buses at 3pm local time and were
cleared at the Egyptian immigration checkpoint in two hours.
They were greeted on arrival by Malaysian Charge d'Affaires in Egypt,
Shaiful Anwar Mohammad and the political secretary to the foreign minister,
Norhaidi Che Dan.
The mission, led by club president Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, entered
Gaza on Aug 9 to deliver humanitarian goods comprising foodstuff, clothing,
blankets and medicines to the Gazans in conjunction with Ramadan.
During the eight-day mission in the conflict area, they distributed goods to
5,000 people from 2,750 families in Gaza City, Jabalyah, Der Al-Balah, Khan
Younis, Rafah and Saifa, which borders Israel.
The mission, which also comprised 35 doctors, medical officers and
paramedics, also distributed medicines and medical equipment to five hospitals
and community clinics manned by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
The mission's last stop was at the Palestine Avenir for Childhood Foundation
where Abdul Azeez handed over financial aid to 400 disabled children.
