MALAYSIA POSTS STRONG GROWTH OF 8.9 PCT IN Q2, SAYS CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia registered a strong
second-quarter growth of 8.9 per cent, compared with 10.1 per cent registered in
the first quarter, driven by sustained expansion in domestic demand and robust
growth in external demand.
In the second-quarter of last year, the country recorded -3.9 per cent
growth.
Malaysia's central bank Bank Negara Governor, Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the
stronger domestic demand was due to higher private and public sector spending
while expansion in external demand spurred domestic production.
On the supply side, she said major economic sectors continued to record
strong growth during the quarter, led by the manufacturing and services sectors.
During the quarter, domestic demand expanded by nine per cent (Q1, 2010 5.3
per cent), due mainly to higher private consumption and continued improvements
in both business and public sector spending.
