Sony to set up wholly foreign-owned firm in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) - Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony said it is preparing to set up a wholly foreign-owned company in Vietnam while maintaining its existing joint venture in the Southeast Asian country.

A Sony Vietnam representative in Ho Chi Minh City said that from September his company will end all production in Vietnam to switch to trading in ready-made imports.

The representative said Sony Vietnam's existing factory manufacturesmainly cathode ray tube TVs, while local consumers are switching to LCD TVs, citing this as the reason for his company's move to end its production of this old-style product.

He also said Sony has so far halted the manufacturing of cathode ray tube TVs in almost all countries in the world.

Since it was established in Vietnam in 1994, Sony Vietnam - a joint venture between the Sony Group of Japan and the Tan Binh Electronics Joint Stock Company - has continually reported an annual growth of 10 percent.

The joint venture, with its main products being TVs, cameras, camcorders, storage and recording media and music players, boasts 180 agents and customer care centres throughout the country.
