GMUN ADOPTS MORE THAN 90 RESOLUTIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The second Global Model United Nations
2010 (GMUN) adopted over 90 resolutions on educational issues, global challenges
and peace on the final day of the conference here Wednesday.

The resolutions were a result of a five-day discussion, debate and
information sharing among 352 university students from 52 UN member countries
around the globe.

It will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) president
Joseph Deiss in September.

During the conference, participants were required to conduct research on
countries, take on roles as diplomats and investigate debate, deliberate,
consult and then develop solutions to global problems.

The resolutions amongst others wanted the issues faced by immigrants,
refugees and minorities be resolved by providing access to education and proper
facilities.

It emphasized the need to develop the legal framework for promoting mutual
understanding between the societies and migrant communities, with particular
reference to the migrant youth.

GMUN also recommended that all member states have a standard protocol for
treatment and rehabilitation of refugees and provide better opportunities for
them.

It also highlighted the important roles that youths have to play at a global
level by suggesting that they should be given opportunities to promote
understanding between cultures, peace and development.

GMUN also believed that the number of global youth movements should be
higher, given that such opportunities would promote greater cross-cultural
understanding thereby bridging cultures for peace and development towards an
alliance of civilization.

The role of the media was also highlighted in the resolution, with
participants acknowledging the media as an important tool to develop critical
thinking skills and to increase ones knowledge of the world's diversity.

The conference also resolved to deplore the use of media as a tool to
disseminate hate speech and misrepresentation of religion, culture and political
belief, through regulatory bodies within their own country, in order to reduce
conflicts among nations.

The conference with the theme "Towards an Alliance of Civilization: Bridging
Cultures to Achieve Peace and Development" was organised by the UN Department of
Public Information.
