GOVT STRIVING TO PROVIDE NEXT GENERATION WITH A BETTER LIFE, SAYS PM

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government is intent on leaving behind for
the next generation a country better than that inherited from leaders of the
past, Prime Minister Najib Razak said Thursday night.

"That's the commitment of the government of today. We are doing all these things
for the future generation. Today, I am breaking the fast with the future face of
Malaysia," he said when breaking the Ramadan fast with student leaders from
public and private tertiary institutions at his official residence, Seri
Perdana, here, the new administrative capital.

The government has never forgotten the coming generations when drawing up
policies and programmes, he said at the function also attended by Higher
Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Najib said the policies and programmes included the 1Malaysia Concept, the
Government Transformation Programme (GTP), the National Key Result Areas (NKRA),
the New Economic Model (NEM) and the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015).

"The target groups likely to benefit the most are the future leaders, those set
to become professionals upon graduation from the universities and those who
could not enter tertiary institutions but are equipped with skills," he said.

He said these people would stand to benefit from the massive transformation the
national landscape was undergoing now.

"If every one of you in university wants a suitable job upon graduation, if you
want quality of life, and if you want to live in a peaceful and progressive
country, then all efforts (to make that happen) must start today," he said.

That was why the government was relentless in its efforts to bring about a
transformation so as to be at the forefront, he said, adding that in managing
the economy, the country had achieved a growth of 10.1 per cent in the first
quarter of this year and 8.9 per cent in the second.

"Hopefully, with your support, we will achieve the desired objectives," he said.
