US$153.44 MIL REMITTED TO STATE CONSOLIDATED FUND FOR 2012, SAYS M'SIAN PM NAJIB
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- A total of RM480.28 million (US$153.44 million) has been credited to the State Consolidated Fund for 2012, Prime Minister Najib Razak said Friday.
The decision was made at the National Finance Council meeting chaired by
Najib who is also Finance Minister.
Of the RM480.28 million, RM280.28 million has been allocated for
disbursement based on the level of economic and infrastructure development and
people's well-being.
Another RM200 million has been allocated to offset the shortfall in the
operations expenditure account, he said after chairing the meeting.
Najib said the council also agreed that the Federal Government pay 50 per
cent of the operational expenditure for sports-related finances as the costs to
prepare athletes and hosting sports events are spiralling, giving pressure to
state governments' coffers.
By paying for the expenditure, the federal government has not only lighten
state governments' financial burden but has also paved the way for improvement
of sports quality in the country, he said.
Under the common pool disbursement for state governments, the council also
sanctioned allocations for social welfare, veterinary services, drainage and
irrigation and heritage preservation that will incur an additional RM65 million
a year, said the prime minister.
Najib said the meeting also agreed that the federal government advanced the
payment for operational and maintenance costs of irrigation in and outside "rice
bowl" areas.
The areas are Muda Agriculture Development Authority, Kemubu Agriculture
Development Authority and Integrated Agriculture Development Projects in all
states including Sabah and Sarawak.
Currently, state governments have to bear the maintenance cost while the
federal government only pays to develop "rice bowl" areas.
To ensure rice bowl areas are well maintained, the federal government has
agreed to pay half the maintenance cost, with state governments footing the
balance, thus relieving state governments' financial pinch, he added.
The National Finance Council meeting is convened to discuss issues involving
state governments particularly finance and related matters.
