VIENTIANE,20. AUG( KPL) - The Irrigation Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, last Friday signed here a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese company of “Norinco International” on the development of water resource in lower part of the Nam Theun II power house and the Sebangfay River in central Khammouane province.
Under the MOU, the Chinese company will soon develop water resource along lower part of the Sebangfay river to ensure sufficient water supply to drought-hit areas where high potential for market-oriented agriculture in Khammouane and Savannakhet provinces exists.
This is a water resource development project under the authority of the Lao Government, which is a high potential project for drought and flood prevention.
This project is estimated to feed water to 55, 000 ha of farmland in dry season and prevent flooding in rainy season on a total area of about 27,700 ha in two central provinces of Khammouane and Savannakhet.
This water resource development project for agricultural production is put in the next five-year plan (2011-2015) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
The main work will include building facilities and irrigation systems in five sections to pump up water for 21,000 ha of farmland in Gnommalath, Mahasay and Thakhek districts, Khammouane province.
The construction work is expected to start next year after the feasibility study.
A large flooding weir with a supply capacity for 11,000 ha in Savannakhet and 23,000 ha in Khammouane province will also be built.
This weir will have a generation capacity of 20 megawatts for rural areas.
The project will also build dykes for the prevention of floodwater, sluice gates along the Sebangfay and Mekong rivers for some flood-prone areas of about 28,000 ha in Mahasay, Sebangfay, Nongbok districts in Khammouane province and Sayboury district, Savannakhet province to reduce the impact of flooding.
This project will also benefit 20,000 ha of farmland in Se Lanong, Se Banghieng, Se Sangsoi and other areas in Savannakhet province.
The signatories to the MOU were Mr. Khamphath Soulinphoumy, Director General of the Irrigation Department, Mr. Nouandeng Rasvong, Vice-Director General of the Irrigation Department, and two representatives of the Norinco International Company.
