MINISTRY TO SEEK ADVISE BEFORE COMPETING IN BANDUNG GAMES
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports will seek the
advise of Wisma Putra (Foreign Ministry) and the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia
before allowing Malaysian students to participate in the Bandung Games from Oct
8-10.
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the action was needed due to
the action of some protesters from kumpulan Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (Bendera)
who turned aggressive during a demonstration by burning the Malaysian flag as
well as throwing faeces at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta Monday.
He said the Ministry would evaluate and monitor the situation before deciding to
allow Malaysian students studying in Indonesia to participate in the games.
"I hope incidents such as the one in Jakarta will not tarnish the good
relationship between the two countries," he told reporters after meeting Union
Cycliste Internationale (UCI) president Pat Macquaid at his office here Tuesday.
The Bandung Games is a yearly activity involving Malaysian and Indonesian
students who participate in sports and cultural activities.
