IGP ORDER FOR POLICE CHIEFS TO CHECK SMUGGLING IN OF FIRECRACKERS

KOTA BAHARU (Kelantan, Malaysia), Aug 25 (Bernama) -- Inspector-General of
Police Musa Hassan has ordered all state and district police chiefs in states
along the border to step up control measures to check the smuggling in of
fireworks and firecrackers.

He said he had also asked them to ensure that there was no storage or sale of
the items.

"I have directed all my personnel to check all places, including Ramadan
bazaars. We will take immediate action if anyone is found to be selling
fireworks and firecrackers," he told reporters after an "Ihya Ramadan" event
attended by the Regent of Kelantan at the compound of the Kelantan police
headquarters, here, Tuesday night.

Musa's directive comes in the wake of the death of a six-year-old boy, Khairul
Arif Ayob, in an explosion which blew up a wooden house where fireworks and
firecrackers were stored, on Sunday.

Musa also advised parents to ensure that their children did not play with
fireworks or firecrackers.
