Green said around 5,100 people from India under the
highly skilled category known as tier one will be allowed to
immigrate to the UK while around 20,000 will be able to go
there for work under the category of skilled workers (tier
two) during July 2010 to March 2011.
"India is the UK's biggest visa operation world wide.
Many people travel between our two countries to conduct
business, to study, to visit family or as tourists. I welcome
this and want to ensure that our visa processes support these
mutually beneficial exchanges. At the same time, I must ensure
that these routes are used properly and are not used to evade
our immigration rules," he said.
The Immigration Minister, who also met Commerce Minister
Anand Sharma and Minister of State for External Affairs
Preneet Kaur, said the limit on tier I and tier II will be
decided annually by the British Government.
"Migration and trade and investment are important aspects
of our enhanced partnership. I am convinced that we can
achieve our objective of reducing migration to the UK, while
driving forward our commitment to trade and investment. We can
do both," he said.
Talking about Indian students wanting to study in the
UK, he said Government will ensure that those who wish to
study in the country "have the necessary qualification and
financial means to do so."
"The UK Government's evaluation of student visa is
intended to support these objectives while preventing those
who use the student route to try to evade UK's immigration
rules," he said adding that British Government was taking
steps ensure that students are protected from "exploitation by
bogus colleges in the country."
Green said licences of 70 educational providers have
been cancelled so far by British authorities.
He said UK Border agency was working hard to shut down
such educational institutions.
Expressing concern over activities of "unscrupulous"
migration agents in India, Green said he has taken up the
issue with Ravi who promised to take effective action in
dealing with the problem.
He said UK Border agency was working with Punjab Police
to crack down on those who resort to fraudulent means to get
UK visas. PTI
