MINISTER URGES YOUTH TO SAFEGUARD HARMONY

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's
Department Jamil Khir Baharom Friday urged youth to safeguard harmony in the country.

He said the younger generation should take the initiatives to learn about the
sensitivities of other races, especially those concerning religion and house of
worship.

"They should be aware that certain actions can cause tensions especially if they
touch on religious matters," he told reporters after attending a recording of
the "Ihya Ramadhan Bersama Menteri" programme at the Institute of Islamic
Understanding Malaysia, here Friday.

Jamil Khir made the reminder in the wake of the recent surau vandalism near
southern city of Seremban where the surau was splashed with red paint and liquor
bottles were thrown into the compound.

Police have arrested four teenagers to facilitate investigations but said that
the incident was not motivated by religious or racial sentiment.

On Thursday, the parents of the teenagers apologised to Muslims in the country
over the incident.
