AID MISSION LEAVES TO HELP PEOPLE IN FLOOD-HIT PAKISTAN

SEPANG, Malaysia, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- A humanitarian aid mission comprising
members of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) and Putera 1Malaysia Club
left for Pakistan Sunday to provide relief assistance in flood-hit areas.

The 11 volunteers, headed by Putera 1Malaysia Club treasurer Abdul Mutalib Abdul
Rahim, left at about 1pm from the KL International Airport, and are expected to
return on Sept 10.

The spokesman for the mission, MRCS Disaster Management manager Nasir Khan Abdul
Rahman, told reporters they were bringing along four tonnes of goods which
included foodstuff, clothing, blankets and medical equipment.

"The mission will arrive in Peshawar and then go to other areas with the
cooperation of the Pakistan government," he said.

He also said that the second mission comprising 50 volunteers, among them 40
doctors, would leave on Friday led by Putera 1Malaysia Club president Abdul
Azeez Abdul Rahim.

Pakistan was recently ravaged by floods which took 1,600 lives, left one million
people homeless and affected the livelihood of 3.5 million more.

MRCS national vice-chairman Dr Bahari Abu Mansor said MRCS members had been
invited to attend the meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference(OIC)
secretariat Sunday and Monday to discuss how the MRCS could assist the people of
Pakistan affected by the floods.
