TENGKU MUHAMMAD ISMAIL PROCLAIMED AS REGENT OF TERENGGANU

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Ruler of Malaysia's
east coast state of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Monday officially
proclaimed his son Tengku Muhammad Ismail as the Regent of Terengganu in a
ceremony at Istana Maziah here.

The proclamation of Tengku Muhammad Ismail, 13, was made after the prince
reached the age of "mukallaf" (accountable person) and able to carry out
responsibility in the absence of Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, who is the
country's Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Malaysia's Supreme King).

Prior to his official proclamation as the Regent, the ruling of the state was
being tasked to the President of the Council of Regency Tengku Baderulzaman
Sultan Mahmud.

The official proclamation of Tengku Muhammad Ismail Monday would render the
council dissolved.

However, in view of the fact that the Regent would be pursuing his studies
abroad from Tuesday, the Sultan of Terengganu has consented to the appointment
of a Council of Regency to carry out the task as stipulated under the state
constitution.

Addressing the ceremony, Tuanku Mizan stressed on the importance of
cooperation between the ruler and government.

"Without unity and cooperation, I doubt that the initiatives taken by the
government to enhance the standard of living of the people can be successfully
implemented," he said.
