PACHAURI 2LST
The mistake over the Himalayan glaciers -- a claim
which was found to be sourced to a magazine article -- and an
earlier error over how much of the Netherlands is below sea
level also tainted the IPCC's image.
While acknowledging that the IPCC had errors, Pachauri
underlined that some of criticism against the IPCC had been
driven by climate skeptics with ideological motivations.
"We also have to remember that honest scientific
discourse wilts under gross distortions and ideologically
driven posturing. Sadly, such tactics have been a prominent
feature of climate science for many years – and they show no
signs of letting up," he said.
Pachauri also pointed out that the British newspaper
responsible for the article, which charged that he made
million dollars from his consultancies, had since retracted
the story.
The IPCC chief had threatened to sue the newspaper
for libel.
"I passed on every single penny to my institute," he
said referring to the Delhi-based The Energy Research
Institute.
"The newspaper had issued an apology ten days ago."
