FIVE KILLED, 28 INJURED AS MOB STORMS SULAWESI POLICE STATION

JAKARTA, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Five people were killed and 28 others injured
Tuesday night after police opened fire to disperse a crowd of about 500 people
who rioted at a police station in central Sulawesi following the death of a
detainee whom they claimed was murdered.

The incident occurred at 9.20pm at the Biau police station, said Indonesian
police public relations chief Brig Gen Iskandar Hasan.

He said the mob damaged the building and a police vehicle and torched a
motorcycle.

The people were angered by the death of a traffic offender at the police
station, reportedly of suicide but which the mob suspected to be murder, he told
a news conference here Wednesday.

He said the police were investigating the case although a post mortem had
revealed no signs of force having been used on the detainee.

Indonesian deputy police chief Commissioner-General Jusuf Manggabarani visited
the police station Wednesday.
