PENANG HALAL HUB SIGNS MOU WITH SINDH BOARD OF INVESTMENT
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Penang International Halal Hub has
signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sindh Board of Investment to
widen the halal industry in Pakistan.
The signing ceremony was held in Karachi during the visit of Penang
Executive Councillor in charge of Islamic religious affairs Abdul Malik Kassim
to Pakistan recently.
Pakistan High Commissioner in Malaysia Masood Khalid said the MoU signing
was a step in the right direction and would certainly benefit both countries in
capturing the multi-trillion dollar halal market.
"Under the agreement, Penang International Halal Hub will identify suitable
area and developer to develop a halal park near Karachi, looking into the
possibility of relocating/expansion of Malaysian halal industry to the proposed
park and chalking out a strategy to market the facility to Pakistani and
Malaysian investors," he said in a statement Friday.
He said both parties had agreed to include in the agreement a jointly-hold
international halal conference at Karachi in December this year with the sources
of funding to be mutually worked out, and the Penang halal hub to play a pivotal
role in attracting international participants to the conference.
Masood said the Penang halal hub had also agreed to assist the Sindh
government to develop a framework of certification and regulation mechanism,
particularly in the areas of nine halal clusters, namely logistics, agro-based
life science, research and development, finance, hospitality, tourism, human
capital and marketing to make up an integrated halal supply chain.
"Both parties also agreed to develop institutions for development of halal
audit and certification procedures to ensure the integrity of halal products,"
he said.
