TRADE DESCRIPTION ACT WILL BE AMENDED FOR "MORE BITE"

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Trade Description Act 1972 will be amended
to give it "more bite" against traders who use fake halal logos, said Minister
in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom.

He said that he would be tabling the motion on the matter at the next sitting of
the Dewan Rakyat (Lower House of Parliament).

He said this in commenting on the raid by the Malaysian Islamic Development
Department (Jakim) at a shopping complex here on Wednesday where it was found a
number of stalls at its food centre were using fake halal logos.

Earlier, he had presented Aidilfitri (celebration to mark the end of Ramadan
month) aid to 380 needy people here Thursday.

Jamil Khir also said a halal hub laboratory had been earmarked in Nilai in
southern state of Negeri Sembilan, which would be managed by Jakim and the
funding for it would come under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
