MALAYSIA’S MERDEKA DAY CELEBRATION IN NEW YORK ATTRACTS LARGE DIPLOMATIC TURNOUT

NEW YORK, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia celebrated its 53rd Merdeka Day on
Thursday evening in New York with a reception that attracted a steady stream of
guests, both Malaysians and non-Malaysians, at Malaysia’s permanent mission to
the United Nations.

Malaysia's permanent representative to the UN, Hamidon Ali and his
wife Amy, hosted the reception.

The main attraction was the exquisite food ranging from chicken satay, curry
puffs, chicken curry, beef rendang to sweet pastries and fruits which were
presented in an eye-catching manner.

The ladies of the Representative Club at the mission had laboured hard to
put the colourful spread which was quickly replenished.

The reception drew a large turnout of diplomats accredited to the UN as well
as members of New York’s consular corps. The large presence of UN-accredited
diplomats was also attributed to the ongoing presidency of the United Nations
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) which, many say, is being led in an
exemplary manner by Hamidon

Senior staff members working in the office of UN secretary-general Ban
ki-Moon were also spotted mingling with the other guests.
